Swiss Soccer Player Ismaili’s Body Recovered from Italy’s Lake Como

GENEVA – Rescue teams have recovered the body of Swiss midfielder Florijana Ismaili, who drowned over the weekend in Italy’s Lake Como, the Swiss Soccer Federation said Wednesday.

“We are all upset, deeply affected and very, very sad,” the federation said in a statement.

The 24-year-old Ismaili, who played for Young Boys and the Swiss national women’s team, drowned on Saturday while swimming in Lake Como.

Rescue teams recovered the young midfielder’s body on Tuesday, the federation said.

Ismaili went swimming with a friend in the lake, jumped into the water from a rented boat and never resurfaced, Italian media reported.

Ismaili’s friend called police, who searched the lake unsuccessfully until Tuesday.

The midfielder made her international debut in 2014 and was a member of the Swiss national team that made its first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in 2015. The team failed to make it to the 2019 edition.

Ismaili, who was of Albanian descent, was the captain of Bern-based Young Boys and was on the roster for 33 matches with the Swiss national team.

In March, Ismaili scored a self-goal in a friendly against Spain.
