Atletico Madrid Wins 3rd Consecutive Spanish Women’s League Title

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain – Atletico Madrid prevailed on Sunday over Real Sociedad 3-1 to win the Spanish women’s soccer league title for the third year in a row.

Although a draw would have been enough for Atletico to seal the deal, the squad was out for a win and tried to take an early lead, a move that offered the home side space to hit back and try to score on counterstrikes.

Atletico took the lead in the 14th minute, when Esther Gonzalez made the most of a cross by Ludmila da Silva, punishing Sociedad for sloppy defense.

Esther seemed to have put the game out of Sociedad’s reach by scoring the second goal in the 46th minute, but the home side needed only 12 minutes to get back in the game on a goal by Nerea Eizaguirre Lasa.

Esther, however, dealt Sociedad’s hopes for a comeback a final blow in the 67th minute, when she completed a hat-trick on yet another superb shot.

As referee Frias Acedo blew the final whistle, several Atletico players burst into tears, celebrating the title on the Jose Luis Orbegozo pitch.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo congratulated his players in a message on his Twitter account.

“We, all Atletico fans, are very proud of you, champions! You have proven that with perseverance, effort and work dreams come true,” Cerezo wrote.

“Over nine months, you have achieved, game after game, (and) collected victories (as you) overcame adversaries ... always with the backing of our wonderful fans,” he added.

“Congratulations to you all! It is time to celebrate the third La Liga title and as for tomorrow we have to prepare with enthusiasm and focus (for) the great Copa de la Reina final which we play next Saturday in Granada. You are one step away from a historic doublet,” he said.

Atletico’s CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, also congratulated the team for the accomplishment.

“Congratulations champions! For one more season, you have made us all proud ... (of) your commitment for your results, for showing the world the values of sports, effort, solidarity, humility, ambition ... You are an example to follow for many girls who want to be the elite and for these who aspire to enjoy their work. Hopefully on Saturday we can celebrate together a historic doublet!” he added.
