MADRID – World No. 1 Naomi Osaka of Japan started on Sunday her Madrid Open campaign with a victory over world No. 33 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2, 7-6 (6).
The 2019 Australian Open and 2018 US Open champion, Osaka, ousted the 2016 Madrid finalist in one hour and 55 minutes at the Manolo Santana court.
This is Cibulkova’s third defeat at the hands of Osaka since 2016, when Cibulkova was defeated at the Japan Open and also bested in 2018, again in the Japanese capital.
Osaka is set to compete against a Spanish player in the second round as she will take on the winner between Lara Arruabarrena and Sara Sorribes Tormo; both Tormo and Arruabarrena were given a wild card.
Earlier Sunday, another two were eliminated from the tournament: No. 15 seed Qiang Wang of China by Croatian pro Donna Vekic and No. 16 seed Julia Goerges by Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia, both with the same result: 7-5, 6-4.
