MADRID – Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone highlighted on Friday the consistency of his team, which has finished in the top three in La Liga for the last six season, during which time it has won one title.
“When we compete we always look to get as high as possible and we try to work to be always in the top spots,” he said.
“By that logic, if you cannot be first, you have to try to end up second, which year after year is going to give you the possibility of maintaining consistency, which we can celebrate at some point,” he added at a press conference after a training session.
“When someone talks about consistency, second, third and one time a champion, talk about that. This is the line Atletico Madrid must follow with and without Simeone,” Simeone said, adding that his team has not secured to end the season in second spot.
“We still need a point,” he said.
The first opportunity Atletico have to secure the runner-up spot behind champion Barcelona will be on Saturday, when they take on Espanyol away at the RCDE Stadium.
Therefore, Simeone said he was totally focused on the upcoming match, not on the two games the team has ahead of it against Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano and Levante on the road.
“We are focused on Espanyol, which concerns us to try to reach as close as possible to the champions,” Simeone said.
He congratulated Barcelona for “the consistency and strength” they showed over their successful campaign.”
The Argentine coach said it was too early to start thinking about next season.
Diego Godin will reportedly leave Atletico, a club he joined in 2010, for Inter.
However, Simeone declined to confirm such reports saying: “For me, it does not seem convenient to talk on his behalf. We love Diego a lot. He put his heart and soul into the club in each match he competed and professionally he is impeccable.”
“We take pride in him being our team’s captain,” he said.
Atletico travel to Barcelona on Saturday for an afternoon kick-off with Espanyol.
