MADRID – Spain’s cyclist Alejandro Valverde will not take part in the 2019 Giro d’Italia due to a sacrum injury, his team Movistar confirmed Friday.
The 39-year-old world champion failed to recover in time from a bone edema in the sacrum sustained during one of the training sessions ahead of the Liege-Bastoña-Liege cycling race in Belgium on April 25.
“It is a shame not to be able to go to a big race like the Giro, but you have to pay attention to the body and recover 100 percent to face the best possible (way) the rest of the year. Good luck to my teammates at Movistar Team in Italy,” Valverde wrote on Twitter.
Valverde will continue his recovery process without taking risks with the aim of returning to competition within a few weeks and regaining top form in the second half of this season.
