SANTIAGO – With four goals from Patricio Rubio in a match full of goals and excitement from start to finish, Chilean team Universidad de Concepcion defeated on Wednesday Peruvian champion Sporting Cristal on the first matchday of Group C in the Copa Libertadores.
The result left the Chilean runners-up at the top of the group after a goalless draw on Tuesday between Argentina’s Godoy Cruz and Paraguay’s Olimpia, the other teams in Group C.
Rubio gave the lead to the home team with the first goal in the stoppage time of the first half, and did justice to the team that dominated the game from the beginning.
The strength of its midfielder and forward – Rubio and Vadala – allowed the Universidad players to repeatedly pierce the defense lines of Sporting, although without fortune in the final play until then.
When it seemed that they were going to their break with a goalless score, Merlo and Calcaterra got entangled in the Peruvian rearguard and the ball was left to Droguett, who assisted Rubio and the latter put the home team in the lead with a low volley shot.
Concepcion returned from the break with the same drive and soon increased the score. In the 50th minute, Rubio, with an assist from Nicolas Orellana, scored the 2-0 for his team.
The visitors reacted like a wounded lion and in the 55th minute Christofer Gonzales scored the 2-1 with a shot from the left side.
The goal invigorated Sporting Cristal and just three minutes later Gonzales sent a pass that was headed in by Cristian Palacios for a temporary tie.
The local team did not give up and, in the 72nd minute, Orellana took advantage of a rebound by goalkeeper Alvarez and put the university team back in the lead.
The excitement remained and in the 80th minute Rubio scored his third goal, the fourth for the U, with an assist from Orellana.
But Sporting Cristal showed its true colors at the end of the game. In the 85th minute, Emanuel Herrera scored the third after a corner and a minute later Cristian Palacios tied the game at 4-4.
However, Concepcion’s team maintained its pressure and, in the stoppage time of the second half, sealed the victory with another goal by Rubio, his fourth in the match.
