Coach Simeone Extends Contract with Atletico through 2022

MADRID – Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has extended his contract until 2022, the La Liga side announced on Thursday.

The previous contract of Simeone, who took the helm of the Spanish club in Dec. 2011, was due to expire on June 30, 2020.

“I want to show gratitude to president Enrique (Cerezo), Andrea (Berta, the sporting director), Miguel (Angel Gil Marin, managing director) and to all the Atletico people for the support for the continuity of this project,” Simeone said in a message published via the club’s social media accounts.

“We have a future till 2022 ahead of us with a lot of excitement, but also with a lot of challenges,” he continued, adding that the commitment of the club toward the project and the eagerness to improve convinced him to renew his contract.

Simeone said the four cornerstones of the club; the fans, players, officials and coach “remain solid and strong as we have been so far and we are going to continue along the same line.”

Under Simeone, who has now extended his contract for the fourth time, the team has had the most successful era in its history, besting the late Luis Aragones, who guided the team to hoist six titles.

Simeone’s Atletico has won the 2013-14 La Liga, the 2012-13 Copa del Rey, two Europa League titles (2011-12 and 2017-18), two UEFA Super Cups in 2012 and 2018 and a Spanish Super Cup in 2014.

The team under Simeone’s guidance played a total of 412 competitive matches, with a balance of 252 wins, 93 draws and 67 defeats, scoring 702 goals and conceding 297.

Luis Aragones set the record for the most competitive matches for any Atletico coach at 611 clashes.

This is the only record Simeone has left to break, while his search for the UEFA Champions League, the only title that has eluded the Argentine coach, continues.

Atletico has been within touching distance of the title of Europe’s elite club tournament twice, when it qualified for the final, but lost on both occasions to its bitter cross-town rival Real Madrid.

The first was in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon in 2014, when a goal by Madrid and Spain center defender Sergio Ramos canceled out an early lead Uruguay defender Diego Godin gave Atletico, forcing extra time, after which Madrid proceeded to score three more goals.

Atletico was offered a second chance in the 2015-16 final played in Milan, but it was Madrid who again emerged victorious on a penalty shootout after both teams were tied at 1-1 following the regular and extra time.
