Mayer Beats Jarry, Progresses to Australian Open 2nd Round

MELBOURNE, Australia – Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer beat Chilean Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3 on Tuesday in a tight first round match at the Australian Open.

Mayer defeated Jarry in an Australian Open first-round match in 2018, before falling to Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the second round.

Mayer, ranked 53 in the world, and Diego Schwartzman are now the only Argentinians in the first Grand Slam of the year, since Juan Martin Del Potro skipped the tournament due to a knee injury.

Mayer will next face 12th seed Fabio Fognini of Italy.
