LEGANES, Spain – A second-half goal by Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri on Saturday was all Leganes needed to prevail over promoted Huesca in La Liga action, ending its five-match winless drought.
Once again, Leganes home ground, the Municipal de Butarque stadium, proved to be their stronghold – where they have lost only once against Villarreal – as they earned their first win after two defeats and three draws.
During the opening minutes, both teams had a conservative approach, as the most distinguished moment during the first 15 minutes took part in the stands, where Leganes’ fans gave a standing ovation to the club’s former goalkeeper Jon Ander Serantes, who joined Japanese Avispa Fukuoka earlier this month.
Leganes’ Argentina left-back Jonathan Silva got the attention back where it belongs; the field, as he fired a shot that went just wide, minutes before his Spanish teammate Oscar Rodriguez tried his luck, but he overshot the ball.
At the other end of the field, Huesca had a golden scoring chance in the 28th minute, when Spanish right winger David Ferreiro fired the ball at the goal, but Greece central defender Dimitris Siovas blocked the ball on a header.
Leganes responded eight minutes later when Spanish attacking midfielder Oscar Rodriguez fired a shot that forced a nice save by Spanish goalkeeper Roberto Santamaria and the scoreless deadlock reigned until the break.
The home side stormed into the second half, creating – and squandered – three chances within the first five minutes, including Silva’s one-on-one situation against Santamaria, who prevented him from scoring and then blocked Rodriguez’s effort after collecting the ricocheted ball.
With open-mouthed fans yet to absorb the squandered chance; En-Nesyri missed on another chance, firing into the woodwork.
One more, En-Nesyri posed a real danger on Huesca’s goal on a header that the goalkeeper blocked with some woodwork assistance.
The third time proved to be the charm, as En-Nesyri found the back of the net on a shot connecting a cross by Silva, to seal the win.
After the win, Leganes provisionally holds the 14th spot in La Liga table with 16 points, while Huesca remains in the 20th and final spot with just seven points.
