Tottenham Pummels Stoke City 5-1; Chelsea Loses 1-0 to West Ham

LONDON – Tottenham Hotspur routed Stoke City 5-1 on Saturday in the 16th round of the Premier League, while defending champion Chelsea lost 1-0 to West Ham United.

Tottenham went up 1-0 on an own goal by Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross in the 21st minute of the contest at Wembley Stadium, the Spurs’ temporary home.

Son Heung-min netted the second goal in the 53rd minute, while Harry Kane scored the third just one minute later.

Kane added the fourth goal in the 65th minute and Christian Eriksen netted the fifth nine minutes later.

Shawcross finally got Stoke City on the board with a goal 10 minutes before stoppage time.

With the home win, Tottenham is provisionally in the fifth position in the Premier League with 28 points, although Arsenal could leapfrog its North London rival with a win Sunday over Southampton.

Stoke City is in 15th place with 16 points.

Chelsea, which suffered a 1-0 away defeat against West Ham on Saturday, is in the third spot with 32 points.

Also Saturday, Burnley earned a 1-0 home victory over Watford, while Bournemouth snatched one point with a 2-2 away draw against lowly Crystal Palace.

Huddersfield Town defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 and host Swansea City topped West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in 16th-round action.

Manchester City, which leads the Premier League with 43 points, will square off against second-placed crosstown rival Manchester United (35 points) in a marquee matchup on Sunday at Old Trafford.
