SAO PAULO – The McLaren Formula 1 team announced on Monday the cancelation of tire testing this week at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo in light of several robberies that took place there ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The team said that they made the decision in consultation with F1 tire supplier Pirelli.
“We have jointly decided with Pirelli to cancel this week’s tire test at Interlagos. The safety of our people has always been our top priority, and, given recent events, we felt that it was an unnecessary risk to proceed,” McLaren tweeted.
Last Friday, staff members of the Mercedes racing team were accosted by armed robbers while leaving the track. The assailants made off with watches and passports, but were thwarted in their attempt to rob an armored car when the driver sped away.
A day later, personnel from the Sauber team were targeted by would-be robbers as they left Interlagos at the conclusion of qualifying for Sunday’s race, which was won by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
