MADRID – Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said on Friday that the only way his side can succeed is by playing as a team.
His comments came at the press conference for Atletico’s upcoming La Liga match against Deportivo.
Atleti heads into Saturday’s contest in La Coruña having won only once in their last eight matches while posting six draws, including a 1-1 deadlock this week with Azerbaijan’s Qarabag in the UEFA Champions League match.
“We are a team and, when you live on what a team provides, you need the greatest involvement of everyone to reach the objective, which is to be team,” the Argentine manager said.
“We don’t depend on one footballer. We don’t have a footballer who wins the match for us by himself. And all the times we have responded to these situations it’s when the entire group pushes as a result of what the team asks,” he stressed.
“I believe in the work we do, I believe in my footballers and I am convinced that there is no better way to improve than with hard work and a positive outlook,” Simeone said.
“If this team has a virtue ... it is that we are a team,” he said. “We are not going to change the way we see things. We are going to continue working the same.”
In their last four La Liga games, Atletico have drawn against Villarreal, Barcelona and Leganes and defeated Celta.
The Colchoneros are fourth in the La Liga table, 8 points behind leader Barcelona.
Atletico, two-time Champions League finalists, are on the brink of being ousted from this year’s competition. With just 3 points, they trail Group C leader AS Roma by five points with two games remaining in the group stage.
