Jailors Arrested in Torture Case at Prison in Kazakhstan

NUR-SULTAN – Five prison employees have been arrested for their alleged involvent in a highly publicized torture case in Kazakhstan, the Central Asian country’s interior minister said Tuesday.

“This is one of the most shameful incidents to happen in our prison system,” Erlan Turghymbaev said in reference to a clandestine video making the rounds on social media that appears to show three jailers hanging a prisoner by his hands that were tied behind his back.

Interior Minister Turghymbaev said “40 audio and video recordings” made at a prison in the southern region of Almaty were analyzed as part of the investigation.

“The recordings show that in two cases torture methods were applied and in others there was abuse of power and violations by correctional workers,” he said.

Turghymbaev said that as a result of the investigation seven people were fired, including the director of the prison where the incidents of torture were detected and two deputy directors.
