Syria Urges UN to Respond to Latest Israeli Airstrikes

BEIRUT – The Syrian government urged the United Nations on Monday to assume its responsibility after Israeli raids targeted military positions in Syria earlier in the day, killing at least 11 people, according to Syria’s state-run news agency SANA.

The Israeli strikes were launched against military bases and depots belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, the Lebanese Hezbollah movement and the Syrian government southwest of Damascus and in the western part of Suwayda province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

“Syria affirms that Israel’s persistence in its dangerous aggressive behavior would not be possible without the unlimited support of the United States administration and the immunity provided to it by the US and other Security Council member states,” the Syrian foreign ministry said in its letter sent to the UN Secretary General and to the head of the Security Council.

Furthermore, the letter reiterated calls “for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities as per the UN Charter and take immediate and decisive steps to prevent Israeli attacks from reoccurring,” according to SANA.

The Syrian government also demanded that the UN should obligate Israel to stop its offenses against the peoples of Syria and Palestine.

Earlier in the day, Israel’s military confirmed it had launched airstrikes against Iranian forces inside Syria after a rocket was allegedly fired at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights late Sunday, adding that it had been intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
