Blaze at Apartment Block in Southern France Leaves 22 Injured

TOULOUSE, France – A powerful fire sweeping through an apartment building in the southern French city of Toulouse on Thursday has left at least 22 people injured, two of them in critical condition.

The four-storey block, located near the Matabiau train station, could be seen smoldering with heavy plumes of black smoke.

“A violent fire was declared last night in a residential building on Rue Bayard in Toulouse,” said an official statement posted on Facebook by the Haute-Garonne department’s fire brigade. “More than 150 firefighters and about 40 vehicles have been mobilized to carry out rescue operations and extinction efforts.”

The statement added that three firefighters were among the injured and that several traffic lanes had been closed to allow rescue operations to proceed smoothly.

According to authorities, the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
