CAIRO – An Egyptian army officer was killed and two other soldiers were wounded when a shell hit an airport in North Sinai during a visit to the area by Egypt’s defense and interior ministers, the army said.
Arish airport was the target of an attack with a projectile that killed an officer, wounded two others and damaged an army helicopter, army spokesman Tamer al-Refai said in a statement.
The attack occurred during a visit to North Sinai by Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar and Defense Minister Sedki Sobhy, who traveled to the troubled region to inspect the units deployed there, the army said.
Soldiers and police responded to the attack and searched the surrounding area, al-Refai said.
North Sinai has been the scene of operations for many radical groups, including the local branch of the Islamic State terror organization, which frequently launches attacks against Egyptian security forces.
