LONDON – Police in the United Kingdom arrested on Monday a man who allegedly tried to ram through a checkpoint at a Royal Air Force base used by the United States military.
Local police said they had been called out to a disturbance at RAF Mildenhall, located in Suffolk, some 12 kilometers (70 miles) north of London.
“The base was put on lockdown and units responded immediately,” a statement from Suffolk Police said. “Shots were fired by American service personnel and a man has been detained with cuts and bruises and taken into custody.”
Police added that there were no other injuries as a result of the security incident and the base had since returned to normal operations.
The US Air Force uses the base to host its KC-135 tanker fleet and for special operations with its 3,200 military personnel installed at the base.
