GAZA – The Israeli army carried out attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip on Thursday after mortar rounds were fired at a military installation inside Israel.
“In response to the mortar shells fired at an IDF (Israel Defense Forces) post near the NE Gaza Strip earlier today, IAF aircraft targeted 2 additional military posts belonging to terror organizations in the Central Gaza Strip,” the military said on Twitter.
Israel holds Hamas responsible for “any hostile activity” carried out from Gaza, which the Islamist movement has governed since 2007.
Israel, the United States and the European Union classify Hamas, winners of the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, as a terrorist organization.
The increase in tension on Thursday comes a month after an Israeli strike on a tunnel connecting Gaza with Israel left 12 people dead.
Israel has maintained a blockade of Gaza for the past decade.
