Death Toll from IS Offensive in Northern Syria Rises to 202, SOHR Says

BEIRUT – At least 202 people have died since last Saturday amid an offensive by the Islamic State against the Syrian city of Tell Abyad and its surroundings, on the border with Turkey, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Wednesday.

Among the dead were at least 140 IS jihadists, while 47 were guerrillas from the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, a Kurdish-Arab alliance backed by the United States.

Both sides clashed since Feb. 27 in the territory stretching from the outskirts of Ras al-Ayn, in the northeastern al-Hasakah province, to the area of Ain Aisha, in the north of the neighboring province of al-Raqqa, the main stronghold of IS in Syria.

The attacked area is under the control of the Syrian Kurdish militias, People’s Protection Units, or YPG, which have the support of the U.S.-led international coalition.

In addition, the extremists beheaded last Saturday 15 civilians, including a woman, whom they accused of not cooperating with IS and helping the YPG.

On Tuesday, the SDF regained control of all the territory captured by IS in this attack.
