Latin American Housing Officials Urged to Improve Quality of Dwellings

ASUNCION – A meeting of housing and urban development officials from Latin America and the Caribbean began on Thursday with a call from the host nation to develop a joint agenda for improving the quality of housing and communities.

Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga addressed the opening ceremony of the Minurvi conference by appealing for greater social inclusion in urban development.

While UN Habitat Regional Director Elkin Velasquez said the 25th Minurvi assembly should draw up an agenda that promotes sustainable development.

With much of Latin America and the Caribbean in recession, the “wealth and value” created by urbanization is even more vital, he said.

More than a dozen governmental delegations are taking part in this edition of the Minurvi gathering, where the objectives include preparing for October’s UN Habitat III conference in Quito.
