BOGOTA – Four people aboard a military helicopter were injured when the aircraft went down Sunday in a refinery belonging to Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol in the north-central city of Barrancabermeja, officials said.
The air force helicopter hit a pipe at the base of some tanks at the refinery, Magdalena Medio police commander Col. William Arias said.
Ecopetrol firefighters immediately put out a small fire started by the crash.
The helicopter’s occupants were taken to a clinic in Barrancabermeja, which is in Santander province.
The aircraft was flying from Cartagena, a Caribbean resort city, to an air force base in Puerto Salgar, located in the central province of Cundinamarca, Arias said.
The helicopter apparently experienced problems with strong winds and went down in the refinery, eyewitnesses said.
