ASUNCION – President Horacio Cartes welcomed his Colombian counterpart, Juan Manuel Santos, on Monday to Paraguay for a one-day visit focusing on political, trade and security issues.
Cartes plans to give Santos the Mariscal Francisco Solano Lopez National Order of Merit, the highest decoration awarded by the Paraguayan government.
After a meeting between their respective ministerial teams, Cartes and Santos will sign a number of agreements dealing with security cooperation and efforts against drug trafficking and international crime.
Santos is also scheduled to visit the new Colombian Embassy in downtown Asuncion.
The Colombian delegation includes Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin, Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas and Trade, Industry and Tourism Minister Maria Claudia Lacouture.
Other members of the Colombian delegation are the president of the COTECMAR maritime technology corporation, Jorge Enrique Carreño, and Felipe Jaramillo, the president of economic development agency Pro-Colombia.
Last September, Cartes traveled to Cartagena to attend the signing ceremony of the first peace agreements between the government and FARC rebels aimed at ending more than half a century of armed conflict in Colombia.
