CARACAS -- China has appointed a new Ambassador to Venezuela.
Ambassador Li Baorong, who has been serving as China's Ambassador to Chile since 2014, has moved to Caracas to take over from departing Ambassador Zhao Bentang as China's new ambassador to Venezuela.
Li, who was born in December 1962, joined China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Division of the Americas in 1986. From 1989 to 1991, he was posted to China's embassy in Caracas. He was then posted to Uruguay until 1993 when he was posted back to Beijing, rising up the ranks to become Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2003, he was again deployed into the field to become Counselor at China's embassy in Cuba.
In 2005, he returned to Beijing and became Counselor for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs in the Foreign Ministry. He rose to Deputy Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Division in 2008 and in 2014 was named ambassador to Chile.
