GUATEMALA CITY – The 11 people aboard a small bus that tried to cross a rain-swollen river in eastern Guatemala were killed when the vehicle was swept away by the current, the Conred emergency management agency said Thursday.
While initial reports said the bus was carrying 16 people, the actual figure was 11 and all of the bodies have been recovered, Conred said on its Web site.
The tragedy occurred Tuesday night when the bus driver tried to cross the Tres Quebradas River in the town of Olopa.
Five of the victims were found in the hours following the wreck and the rest were recovered Wednesday.
Two of the eight female fatalities were pregnant, according to Conred, which said that heavy rains and flooding have claimed nearly 40 lives this year in Guatemala. EFE
