BOGOTA – Four more people have been murdered in Villa del Rosario, a city in Colombia’s Norte de Santander province near the border with Venezuela, marking the third massacre in the area in less than three weeks, officials said.
A total of 16 people have now been murdered in the turf war between rival drug gangs in the city, Villa del Rosario Mayor Emperatriz Misse Millan said.
Twelve other people have been murdered in similar incidents since May 31.
The turf war may be linked to an internal dispute involving members of the Los Rastrojos gang or an incursion into Norte de Santander by a rival gang, police said.
Seven people were murdered in the hamlet of Juan Frio, located outside Villa del Rosario, on May 31.
Five people were shot dead inside a vehicle on a highway near the city a week later.
Municipal officials plan to meet with police to discuss the situation and take measures to deal with the violence, Misse Millan said. EFE
