GUATEMALA CITY – Five people were killed and 10 others wounded Friday during an armed robbery on an intercity bus in western Guatemala, fire rescue personnel said.
The crime took place as the bus was passing through the municipality of Santo Domingo Xenacoj en route from Quetzaltenango to Guatemala City.
The robbers were several people who boarded the vehicle in the town of Chimaltenango, the sister of one of those killed told Emisoras Unidas radio.
“They robbed us, then we heard shouts and the explosions (of the gunshots). What I did was duck,” said the sister of 25-year-old teacher Milton Isidro Yax, the only one of the dead to be identified so far.
The 10 passengers wounded in the attack were taken to the main hospital in Antigua, the old colonial capital 45 kilometers (28 miles) west of Guatemala City, fire rescue spokesman Mario Cruz said.
Police began a search for the robbers as forensic technicians collected evidence aboard the bullet-riddled bus. EFE
