GUATEMALA CITY – Three people were killed and two others wounded Wednesday in a drive-by shooting at the office of a private security firm in the Guatemalan capital, authorities said.
An unknown number of assailants armed with assault rifles fired on the headquarters of a company that provides security guards for buses, a police spokesperson said.
Two guards and a female employee died, while another guard and the slain woman’s mother were wounded.
The security firm provides services to Transurbano, a bus company operating in metropolitan Guatemala City, where transit operators face extortion threats from violent gangs.
Scores of bus drivers and other transit workers have been slain after companies failed to make protection payments to the gangs.
Guatemala experiences an average of 16 homicides a day, according to official figures. EFE
