BOGOTA – Fifteen people were killed and 16 others injured in a bus accident in Meta, a province in central Colombia, police said Sunday.
The accident, which left several children dead, occurred on Saturday, highway patrol commander Gen. Rodolfo Palomino said.
Indications are that the accident was caused by a combination of driver error and brake failure, Palomino said.
The bus crashed at the entrance to the Quebradablanca tunnel on the highway that links Bogota and Villavicencio, the capital of Meta.
Thirteen people were pronounced dead at the scene and two others died at hospitals in Villavicencio, where the injured, including the bus driver, remain hospitalized.
Several accidents were reported Saturday in Colombia, which is celebrating the three-day St. Joseph’s holiday.
More than 20 people died in the accidents, the highway patrol said.
