Beauty Queen Arrested for Decrowning Mrs. Sri Lanka 2021

COLOMBO -- Police arrested the reigning Mrs. World, Caroline Jurie, and a former model on Thursday for assaulting the winner of the Mrs Sri Lanka 2021 competition and removing her crown at the awards ceremony.

After Pushpika De Silva was declared the winner and crowned at the ceremony on Sunday, Jurie appeared on stage and announced that she failed to meet the pageant's requirements because she was divorced.

She then went on to forcefully remove the crown from De Silva and present it to the first runner-up.

De Silva lodged a complaint with the police on Wednesday for assault and claiming her self respect suffered a blow due to the incident.

Jurie, winner of Mrs. Sri Lanka in 2019, was arrested along with former model Chula Padmendra in Colombo after recording their statement to the police, the law enforcement body's spokesperson, Ajith Rohana, told the media.

The police are further investigating the matter.

The winner of Mrs. Sri Lanka 2021 explained to EFE that ripped the crown off her head during the ceremony, causing her injuries and a subsequent blackout for which she had to be hospitalized.

"This is not the way for Mrs. World to behave. Mrs. World is a kind and loving person. She has inner beauty. She (Ms. Jurie) showed us who she was when she took my crown away," De Silva added.

The Mrs. Sri Lanka contest is a franchise of Mrs. World, the first international beauty contest created in 1984 for married women only, which Jurie won in 2020 in Las Vegas.

In fact, the first winner of the Mrs. World competition is none other than the current mayor of Colombo, Rosy Senanayake.

The beauty pageant is a popular event in the country, and videos of the crown being taken from De Silva and being presented to another contestant quickly became viral on social media.

De Silva was crowned again on Tuesday in a smaller ceremony after the organizers of the event, who have described the incident as "disgraceful", ratified her as the winner.
