LOS ANGELES – American TV star Kimberly Kardashian West broke down after learning that she had tested positive for lupus in an antibody test, a moment that was broadcast during the premiere of the new season of her popular reality show.
“I’m freaking out!” she exclaimed amid tears after learning of the result via telephone.
Kardashian had previously revealed that she had been suffering from several arthritis-related symptoms for a while, one of the most common consequences of the systemic autoimmune disease.
“I’ve been feeling so tired, so nauseous and my hands are really getting swollen,” she said. “I feel like I literally am falling apart. My hands are numb,” the small-screen star and business tycoon said on her long-running show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”
Accompanied by her sister Kylie Jenner, Kardashian admitted she had experienced joint swelling, headaches and general fatigue before the arrival of her fourth child, Psalm, who was born in May from surrogacy.
“Lately, my wrists are starting to hurt again but it’s definitely a different feeling,” she said. “I feel this in my bones. It’s starting to really worry me. I really have to look into this,” the influential celebrity told the cameras.
Kardashian speculated that based on her symptoms, she might suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, so she decided to consult a doctor.
“It’s so scary. So, I have to go to the doctor and see what’s going on because I can’t live like this,” she said.
According to the story she re-told on her show, her doctor called after several medical tests to report that her blood tests revealed antibodies related to lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
After hearing the call, Kardashian collapsed and broke into tears.
However, the doctor explained that the result doesn’t necessarily mean that Kardashian suffers from both diseases, but that she has the antibodies for the two conditions, which could either remain dormant or worsen in the future. He also warned that a false positive for lupus was within the realm of possibility.
Lupus occurs when the body’s immune system starts attacking its own tissues and organs, causing inflammation, while rheumatoid arthritis – also an autoimmune disorder – affects the lining of a person’s joints and can lead to painful swelling.
This is not the first time that the 38-year-old mogul has shared her health problems in public: the same thing happened when she was diagnosed with psoriasis or when she had pregnancy problems with her husband, rapper Kanye West.
