TOKYO – Japan’s former empress has successfully undergone an operation for breast cancer, the Imperial Household Agency reported Sunday.
A tumor was detected in 84-year-old Michiko’s left breast in July, and early-stage cancer was diagnosed in August following a biopsy.
Former emperor Akihito and their only daughter Sayako Kuroda accompanied Michiko to the operating theater at the University of Tokyo Hospital Sunday morning ahead of her surgery, state broadcaster NHK reported.
Michiko has lost weight due to stress and a busy schedule this year amid the royal succession, said the Imperial Household Agency, and in June she underwent a cataract operation, after being diagnosed with cardiac abnormalities.
Akihito abdicated in April after three decades on the throne in favor of their first-born son, Emperor Naruhito.
