Ecuador Joins China’s New Silk Road Initiative

BEIJING – Ecuador joined on Wednesday China’s extensive infrastructure project known as the New Silk Road or Belt and Road initiative.

Ecuador formally joined the initiative following a meeting between its president, Lenin Moreno, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Latin American section, Zhao Bentang, confirmed that the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding, making Ecuador the 16th nation from Latin America and the Caribbean to do so with the Asian giant.

Zhao said that the move would reinforce mutually beneficial cooperation in infrastructure construction, production capacity, agriculture, information technology, renewable energy, and environmental protection.

Other agreements reached between the Chinese government and the delegation led by Moreno were in matters of disaster mitigation and management, cultural exchanges, police and judicial cooperation, and civil aviation.

Moreno, leading a diplomatic and business delegation, on Tuesday began a three-day visit to Beijing to attract Chinese investment and boost Ecuadorian exports to the Asian country, as well as reinforcing political ties and negotiating its debt to China.
