Real Sociedad Tops Celta 2-0 to Advance in Copa del Rey

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain – Real Sociedad beat Celta for the second time in 10 days – the other being a La Liga match – and secured its ticket to the Copa del Rey next round with goals by Mikel Oyarzabal and Adnan Januzaj.

Celta, with many new players in the 11-man group that was missing heavyweights Aspas, Maxi Gomez and Brais Mendez, were on the hunt for a goal right from the start after the sides drew 1-1 in the first leg, something they could have gotten just three minutes into play if Okay’s shot had not simply brushed the crossbeam of Moya’s goal.

Sociedad, meanwhile, got itself on the board for the first time on a shot by Oyarzabal in the 10th minute.

The hosts took advantage of the shock quickly and once again found the necessary scoring combination when Januzaj left-footed an impossible-to-block shot past Sergio Alvarez to make it 2-0 in the 26th minute.

Celta tried to stage a comeback and narrow the scoring differential before the break, since that would have given them the entire second half to sink another one and move to the round of 16, and they were close to doing so on a brilliant play by Emre Mor, when he beat three local players to go one-on-one against Moya, who managed to block the shot.

The good play shown in the first half, however, degenerated into a much more logjammed match in the second period, leaving both teams – but most especially Celta – little to brag about in their second-half efforts by the final whistle.
