Scottish Parliament Rejects Brexit Draft Deal in Non-Binding, Symbolic Vote

EDINBURGH – Scotland’s devolved parliament voted on Wednesday against the proposed Brexit deal put forward by the United Kingdom’s government.

Lawmakers belonging to four out the five parties present in Holyrood – the Scottish Nationalist Party, the Scottish Green Party, the Liberal Democrats and Labour – backed the non-binding motion that rejected the draft deal and spurned the prospect of withdrawing from the European Union with no deal at all.

Conservative MSPs, siding with the executive of Tory Prime Minister Theresa May in London, voted against the motion.

Although the decision is symbolic, it is indicative of Holyrood’s position with regards to the Brexit treaty currently being debated in Westminster, which is set to be voted on by the House of Commons on Dec. 11.
