MONTEVIDEO – The European Union delegation in Uruguay presented its 2018 Human Rights award on Wednesday to the Canguro Foundation, which provides both physical and emotional care to babies whose mothers are in difficult situations.
At the award ceremony, EU envoy Karl-Otto König stressed the importance of the work of the foundation in safeguarding the rights of the most vulnerable.
Pamela Moreira, the president of the foundation, told EFE that the award, which includes travel to Brussels to meet with EU officials and representatives of European NGOs, will motivate volunteers to keep working.
“Though the biggest reward we have is to receive all that we receive from the babies and their families, to receive an award like this is not only a recognition that we greatly value, but also an enormous motivation to go on,” she said.
“We have 280 volunteers, we accompany the babies 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and the results are very promising because we have noticed that the babies leave the hospital in a much better state, with a weight gain ... which denotes not only the physical health but also the emotional health of the child,” Moreira said.
