MAJADAHONDA, Spain – A goal by Kenti Robles in the waning moments of regulation on Thursday earned Atletico Madrid a 1-1 draw against Manchester City in the first leg of a Women’s Champions League tie.
The hosts were the better side, especially in the second half, and certainly deserved at least a point for their efforts.
Atleti got off to a fast start in front of roughly 2,000 spectators at Cerro del Espino in the Madrid suburb of Majadahonda and it came as a surprise when the visitors took the lead in the 15th minute, when Caroline Weir’s corner found Gemma Bonner at the near post and the City defender scored on a header.
Buoyed by the goal, the English side enjoyed a spell of possession before Atletico reclaimed the initiative and never let go.
The Spanish club attacked at will in the second half and speedy Brazilian striker Ludmila came close on two occasions before Robles lifted the ball over City keeper Karen Bardsley in the 89th minute.
