Police in Puerto Rico Dissuade Woman from Jumping off Roof

SAN JUAN – Two Puerto Rican police officers succeeded on Wednesday in talking down an employee of the Agriculture Department who was threatening to jump off the building’s roof.

Nirma Martinez Alvarez, 52, went up to the roof in the morning, where she remained until police arrived, Lt. Jose Ayala Resto told EFE.

Ayala Resto was attempting to dissuade the woman from jumping, as Lt. Jose Rosa Lopez – a certified negotiator – made his way to the woman and got a hold of her.

Martinez – who works as a secretary at the government office – suffers from depression, which worsened following a work-related altercation early Wednesday, the officer said.

“It seems that she got a very intense bout of depression in the morning,” the 24-year police veteran said. “She said that she was being marginalized at work. She couldn’t take it anymore; she went up and didn’t let anyone get close.”

Martinez Alvarez was then taken to a nearby hospital.
