Thousands Evacuated from Chilean Skyscraper in Fire Drill

SANTIAGO – More than 4,500 people were evacuated from Chile’s second-tallest building on Wednesday as part of a massive exercise for first responders, authorities said.

The drill simulated a blaze on the 47th floor of Santiago’s 55-story Titanium tower.

Besides the evacuation of the office workers, the exercise included two mock rescues from the roof of the Titanium, one involving a helicopter and the other the deployment of a 55-meter (180-ft.) ladder from a terrace on a lower floor.

Firefighters, paramedics, various municipal police forces and Chile’s Air Medical Service took part in the drill, which was deemed a success by authorities and the building’s management.

The Titanium is 194 meters (636 ft) tall, second in Chile only to the 300-meter Costanera Center.
