Authorities Confirm 3 Dead, 32 Injured in Colombia Floods

CORINTO, Colombia – Colombian authorities confirmed on Wednesday that three people have died and 32 others were injured on Tuesday after the river La Paila flooded the municipality of Corinto in the southwestern part of the country.

“The number of deaths caused by the flooding has gone down to three,” said the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management in a statement, adding that a fourth death was falsely attributed to the flood.

The dead were identified by the National Institute of Legal Medicine as Maria Fernanda Usnas Cayapu, 30, Flor de Maria Restrepo Acevedo, 80, and a minor.

Out of the 32 injured, seven have been medically evacuated out of the municipality located in the Department of Cauca.

It was also stated that on Thursday, the first emergency humanitarian aid will be delivered.

Cleaning and debris removal work has started in the streets of Corinto to channel the water of the river to avoid new emergencies, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management said.
