Uruguay is Latin America Leader in Digital Government, Expert Says

MONTEVIDEO – Uruguay is currently “the regional leader” in Latin America in nearly every area having to do with digital government, AGESIC information technology agency director Jose Clastornik told EFE on Wednesday.

The South American country stands out “not just in the specific indicators of procedures and services, but also in other thematic areas that are associated with access to public information, cybersecurity, community resources, access and everything having to do with digital development,” the engineer said.

Uruguay ranks ahead of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Brazil in digital development, and is ahead of them in terms of digital government, Clastornik said, citing 2016 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UN figures.

“Spain was our benchmark in some digital government areas and especially in data security,” Clastornik said. “Today, the benchmarks in Europe for digital government are Estonia and England.”

Clastornik spoke during a conference marking the 10th anniversary of AGESIC’s launch.
