Death Toll in Mexico Prison Riot Reaches 16

MEXICO CITY – The death toll from disturbances at Cadereyta prison in northern Mexico stands at 16, the government of Nuevo Leon state said Wednesday.

Twenty-six other people, including three guards and two police officers, were injured during the uprising at the penitentiary outside Monterrey, the state capital.

Inmates’ families gathered Wednesday outside the gates of Cadereyta to demand information about their loved ones.

Most of the prisoners who died were awaiting trial for “high-impact offenses,” state Attorney General Bernardo Gonzalez said, using a term that usually refers to kidnapping and violent drug-related crimes.

He said that prosecutors were eyeing possible charges against 54 inmates for their alleged involvement in the latest outburst of violence at Cadereyta, where four people died six months ago in an earlier riot.

The disturbances began early Tuesday and were brought under control a few hours later, but flared again after sunset, when inmates began burning mattresses.
