Argentine President Has Private Meeting with Former US President Obama

BUENOS AIRES – Argentine President Mauricio Macri held a private meeting on Saturday with former US President Barack Obama at a golf course in the Buenos Aires province town of Bella Vista near the nation’s capital, official sources said in a statement.

The Argentine government noted the informal and private nature of the meeting, held outside all official protocol and more like a pastime shared by “friends,” according to the state news agency Telam.

Barack Obama has been in Argentina since Friday, when he took part in a sustainable economy summit in the central city of Cordoba, and where he told a press conference that “Macri is a man in a hurry.”

“I’m impressed because he has moved rapidly on so many of the reforms that he promised, to create more sustainable and inclusive economic growth and to reconnect Argentina with the global economy and the world community,” Obama said.

Donald Trump’s predecessor in the White House previously traveled to Argentina in March 2016 while still president, on a two-day state visit that ended with a get-together of the Macri and Obama families in the southern city of Bariloche.

The exclusive club where Macri and Obama met Saturday and played a game of golf is presided over by Gianfranco Macri, brother of the Argentine president.
