Large Anti-Drug Operation Launched in Northern Rio de Janeiro Slum

RIO DE JANEIRO – Around 1,000 Brazilian police and members of the military were participating on Friday in a large-scale operation to track down around 30 drug dealers in a shantytown on Rio de Janeiro’s north side.

Six people have been arrested thus far in the operation, which is being carried out in a “favela” known as Morro dos Macacos and aimed at dismantling drug dealing in the community.

Helicopters and armored vehicles are being used to support the operation.

The security forces are looking to apprehend Leandro Nunes Botelho, alias Scooby, who is believed to control drug sales in the favela and be linked to the drug-related violence that erupted a few weeks ago in the large favela of Rocinha, which army soldiers occupied for several days.

Scooby allegedly played an active role in the conflict in Rocinha, allying himself alternatively with the warring drug-gang leaders in that favela, the G1 news portal reported.
