Florida Theme Parks Reopen after Hurricane Irma

MIAMI – Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, the two giant theme parks located in central Florida, reopened on Tuesday after crews completed clean-ups in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

The hurricane crossed Florida on Monday on a track that took it southwest of Orlando, lashing central Florida with sustained winds of up to 98 kph (58 mph).

The torrential rains and strong winds from the storm affected Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando.

Disney closed its Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs due to flooding and downed trees.

The Magic Kingdom has shut its doors only about half a dozen times since opening in 1971.

SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa are still closed while crews remove the debris left behind by Irma, which killed at least six people in Florida.
