Cuba on Alert for Hurricane Irma

HAVANA – The Cuban government expanded on Friday its storm alert to 11 of 16 provinces ahead of an “imminent impact” from Hurricane Irma as it clips the island’s northern moving westward.

Three-quarters of Cuban territory is expected to feel the effects of Irma, a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The hurricane has already caused flooding in parts of eastern Cuba, including the town of Baracoa, which was hit hard last year by Hurricane Matthew.

Nearly 700,000 people have left their homes in coastal areas on Irma’s projected path, along with some 36,000 tourists.
