Authorities Investigate Deaths of 63 Children in Hospital in India

NEW DELHI – Indian authorities are investigating the deaths of 63 children, several of them babies, over the last five days, for possible negligence in a hospital in Gorakhpur in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

“UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked to investigate the matter thoroughly and assured strong action,” according to the official Twitter account of the chief minister’s office on Saturday.

UP Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh and Minister of Medical Education Ashutosh Tandon have traveled to Gorakhpur to examine the situation.

At least 63 children admitted in Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital have died from encephalitis and a lack of oxygen since Aug. 7 with 30 more deaths recorded in the last 48 hours, according to local news agency IANS.

Opposition Indian National Congress party has demanded an investigation into the alleged negligence.

“Deeply pained. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. BJP government is responsible and should punish the negligent who caused this tragedy,” tweeted opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.
