CAIRO – The Syria government and its ally Russia condemned on Friday an attack by the international coalition against an army post in the Syrian desert.
A Syrian military source told the official agency SANA that no one has the right to determine the course of the Damascus government’s operations against terrorism.
The attack on Thursday killed an undetermined number of people and caused material damage, the source added.
The United States-led international coalition confirmed on Thursday that, following maneuvers and warning shots, its planes bombed military forces advancing near al-Tanf (close to the Iraqi border) and posing a threat to forces supported by the US.
The military source asserted that this aggression against the Syrian army clearly shows what he dubbed as the Zionist-American plan in the region, referring to Syrian allegations that Israel and the US support terror groups.
He said that there was no justification for the attack and reiterated that Syrian troops, along with their allies, are the only legal force fighting terrorism in Syria.
Meanwhile, the Russian government called the attack “absolutely unacceptable” and a “violation of Syria’s sovereignty.”
“Any military actions entailing the aggravation of the situation in Syria certainly influence the course of the political process, especially such actions that were committed against the Syrian armed forces,” said Russian deputy foreign minister Gennadiy Gatilov, quoted by the news agency Interfax.
The international coalition said on Twitter on Thursday that the attack was carried out “despite #Russian attempts to dissuade pro-regime movement towards At Tanf, #Coalition aircraft show of force, & warning shots.”
The coalition recalled that it has been operating in al-Tanf for months offering training and advice to allied forces fighting the Islamic State terror organization.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, eight pro-government militia, most of them foreign, were killed and several wounded in the attack.
