Isner Slams Wawrinka Out of Rome Masters

ROME – American tennis player John Isner defeated on Thursday the world No. 3, Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, 7-6 (1), 6-4, eliminating him from the last 16 of the Rome Masters tournament.

The American, who holds the record for most aces in a match, achieved another 19 aces in Thursday’s game, defeating Wawrinka in one hour and 25 minutes.

Wawrinka, who was a finalist at the Foro Italico in 2008, suffered his third defeat in four clashes with the powerful Isner, a rival he has only defeated once in 2009 in Tokyo.

This is the best result of Isner’s career on Rome’s clay court, where he is set to play next against Croatian Marin Cilic.
