Fecal Microbacteria Help Control Diabetes, Researchers Find

TAIPEI – Fecal microbacteria have been shown to control diabetes in animal testing and also are expected to be effective in upcoming experiments involving human beings, researchers from Taiwan announced on Saturday.

Dr. Wu Junying, from Taiwan’s Taichung Veterans General Hospital, noted that microbes were the cause of many diseases but said that thanks to the development of big-data technology researchers have been able to conduct studies on tens of millions of these microorganisms and discovered that some have curative properties.

Wu explained at a press conference that drugs extracted from fecal bacteria altered animals’ gut flora and helped fight several diseases, including diabetes.

The positive outcome of this research on diabetes in animals bodes well for the use of bacteria to cure other diseases, according to the researcher.
