Chilean Transport Minister Resigns; Bachelet Names Tapia Salas to Post

SANTIAGO – Chilean President Michelle Bachelet accepted on Tuesday the resignation of Transportation Minister Andres Gomez-Lobo and appointed attorney Paola Tapia Salas to replace him, government officials said.

Gomez-Lobo had served in the post since March 11, 2014, and in recent weeks had been under constant attack by the opposition because of the high rate of payment evasion on the capital’s Transantiago public transport system, where in the last quarter of 2015 more than 35 percent of the passengers did not pay their fares.

The opposition had launched efforts to question Gomez-Lobo on the matter, although at the La Moneda announcement of the change in ministry leadership Bachelet said that he had presented his resignation to her in January “for personal reasons.”

Tapia Salas is the attorney for the University of Chile and has worked in the Transportation Ministry for more than a decade, serving most recently as the minister’s legal adviser.
